Hello all:

On behalf of Cleveland Metroparks, we regret to inform everyone that the 2011 Canoe & Kayak Challenge to be held Saturday, May 21 at Hinckley Lake is CANCELLED.

After reviewing the number of pre-registered canoers and kayakers, we've determined that it would not be fair to all parties to continue in the record attempt.

If you've pre-registered, either your check will be mailed back to you within the week and if we've processed your check, a refund will be mailed by the end of the month.

We appreciate your support.

Time to Come Together & RECLAIM the World Record from Pittsburgh!

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Venture Outdoors is set to announce that they are the current official Guinness World Record holder for the Largest Raft of Free Floating Canoes & Kayaks. But the good news for Cleveland Metroparks is that the official number is not as high as originally announced! The official number to be recognized by Guinness for the Pittsburgh record is 1,619 canoes & kayaks.

Sign up now and join Cleveland Metroparks in attempting to make history by RECLAIMING the Guinness Book of World Records with the "Canoe & Kayak Challenge" on Saturday, May 21 at Hinckley Lake in Hinckley Reservation.

And, this World Record seems to be a hot one for organizations to try and break. River Action, Inc. from Davenport, Iowa will attempt to break the record at their "Floatzilla" event on August 20 and One Square Mile of Hope from Inlet, New York (who took the record from Cleveland Metroparks in 2008 with 1,104 boats) will attempt to break the record on September 24.

Help break Pittsburgh's record and set the record so high that Iowa and New York will be "upstream without a record!"

A raft of 582 kayaks and canoes, organized by Cleveland Metroparks, was held together by hands only for 30 seconds while free floating on Hinckley Lake, Cleveland, OH on May 21, 1995.

Unfortunately, the rules handed down by Guinness - all canoes and kayaks have to be hard shell to be in the official record attempt.

FAQ's

Where do I park?: Parking will be available next to the Ranger Station across from the Swimming Area (off Bellus Road) until filled. Free shuttles will be provided to and from additional overflow parking areas.

How is the challenge recorded?: A plane will fly over the lake and take a photo for evidence that the record has been achieved. Copies of all entry forms are also submitted to Guinness World Records for verification.

Do I have to pre-register?: Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, and will help the check-in process run more efficiently. Day of registration will be available at $20 per canoe and kayak with $10 per additional rider.

Can I bring my own boat?: Yes! You must have a canoe or kayak to participate and to count toward the record. No other types of boats are allowed. There are a limited amount of canoes/kayaks to be rented. Call 216-341-1704 for information on rental options.

If there are more riders in the boat, does it add more to the total count?: No. The record is based on the number of boats, not the number of riders.

What time should I arrive?: The schedule for the day is:
8 -10:30 a.m. – boats launch from the parking lot area, adjacent to the Swimming Area
11 a.m. – raft of boats gather on the lake in front of the Hinckley Lake Boathouse
11:15 a.m. – photo plane fly-over and record attempt!

Can I get a copy of the official photo?: Yes. Include an extra $3 per photo with your registration form/fee and check the corresponding box. The photo will be mailed to the address provided on the form unless otherwise indicated.

Can non-participants come to watch?: Yes. Spectator-friendly areas will be posted and marked. No admission fee is required for spectators not participating in challenge.
